A
"Goodwill flight" to India at the invitatation of the RAF was made by
three Boripatra aircraft of the Siamese Aeronautical Division at the
end of 1929. They left Bangkok on the morning of the 22nd
December but less than two hours into the flight the lead aircraft
developed engine trouble and made an emergency landing in the jungle
just short of the Burmese border. The flight leader was fatally
injured but the pilot escaped injury. The remaining aircraft
turned back to Bangkok where a rescue was organised.
It was decided to continue the mission and the surviving aircraft left
Bangkok on the 24th, reaching Delhi on the 1st January.
The aircraft returned form Delhi on the 10th of January, reaching
Bangkok on the 23rd.
The mail, having been recovered from the crash site, was later sent on
by sea, letters for Rangoon arriving on the 13th January. All the
mail carried received a special cancellation in Bangkok and had to be
marked "By Air Mail to India". A special rate of 60 Satang for
20gms or part thereof plus 15 Satang if registered. The normal
receiving mark was applied in Rangoon.
